Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome or PCOS is a condition that leads to a hormonal imbalance in women, primarily between the age group of 18-44. Women suffering from the syndrome tend to develop small cysts in their ovaries. These cysts generally lead to hormonal imbalances. In PCOS, the secretion of the male hormone ‘androgen’ (otherwise present in a small amount in women) increases abnormally, thereby causing a significant disruption in the ovulation process and menstruation periods.

Although the exact reason of what causes PCOS is not known, researches have revealed that women suffering from obesity or who have a past history of PCOS have a higher risk of suffering from the syndrome.

Symptoms-

The symptoms that you are very likely to experience along with PCOS are as follows:

  • Irregular or scanty periods.
  • Problems with conception.
  • Intense pain in the pelvic region and severe depression.
  • Infertility.
  • Acne breakouts along with the development of excess body and facial hair.

Treatments-

Women who suffer from the syndrome might undergo the following treatments which might help in the regulation of the symptoms.

  1. The inclusion of any form of physical exercise in your daily routine (like walking or jogging) might help you combat the symptoms of PCOS.
  2. Reduce body weight in order to restore the hormonal balance and subsequent normalcy of your menstrual period.
  3. You should include fruits, green vegetables, nuts, beans and legumes in your daily diet as they are good for your heart and limit foods that are rich in saturated fats such as fast foods, red meat, cheese etc.
  4. A prescribed dosage of medications can help you deal with acne or excessive facial hair stemming from PCOS.
  5. Fertility medicines will be prescribed if you suffer from infertility related problems. In order to regulate your menstrual periods, your doctor might also suggest a prescribed dosage of metformin.
