Gone are the days when student life was believed to be the best and carefree days of life. In today’s time, the academic pressure, the expectations of the parents and loved ones and the crazy competition to excel in everything (both academics as well as extracurricular) is taking a toll on the physical and mental health of students. Various surveys suggest that the incidences of stress, anxiety, and depression in students are on a mercurial rise. In this article, we will discuss some of the common signs indicative of stress and anxiety in students and the solution to ensure proper and effective stress and anxiety management.
Signs and symptoms of stress and anxiety in students:
- Stress in students often triggers behavioural changes and may have mood swings. The child may lose temper or get agitated and irritated at the drop of a hat.
- There may be profuse sweating, palpitations, nervousness, or breathlessness.
- In case of severe stress, the student may encounter sleeping problems. He or she may either sleep all day or may not sleep at all.
- There may be changes in the eating habits as well.
Management of stress and anxiety in students:
A stressed-out student is going through a tough time. More than anything, they need the love, care, and support of their family, friends, and well-wishers the most.
Parents and teachers, in particular, can play an instrumental role in helping the affected individual cope with the pressure and the stress. Parents need to have realistic expectations; understand the strength of children and help them nurture it. Appreciate your child, even for small achievements and encourage them to excel in future endeavours. Parents should also keep a check on their child’s (especially teenagers) friend circle. At times, the wrong company of friends can also leave the students stressed out. Maintain a positive environment at home. Go for small family vacations.
Teachers can also guide the students and hold counselling sessions before the exams to keep the students calm and relaxed.
- Exercise and meditation work wonders to soothe and relax the physical and the mental health. It also helps to increase the concentration level. Thus, students (especially those under stress) should often meditate and exercise. The students should stay happy and cheerful.
- Make sure the students follow a healthy sleep cycle. They sleep early and wake up early. A daily 6-8 hour of sleep is a must. Music is also known to be a great stress buster. Students should be encouraged to listen to soft and soulful music regularly.
In extreme cases, seek medical help. The counselling sessions can produce fruitful and positive results.
