Sexually transmitted diseases or STDs are serious complications irrespective of whether you are pregnant or not. But in case you are pregnant, complications are higher. In this case your baby is affected along with you. And for some STDs, like HIV/AIDS, conditions may be incurable or even fatal.
Early detection and treatment is the best way to prevent the infection from harming you and your child.
Types of sexually transmitted diseases:
1. HIV/AIDS
2. Herpes
3. Gonorrhea
4. Hepatitis B
5. Genital warts
6. Syphilis
7. Chlamydia
8. Trichomoniasis
Symptoms:
1. Bumps or warts near the opening of genital area
2. Redness or swelling in the genital area
3. Painful urination
4. Skin rashes
5. Itching near the genital area
6. Painful sex
7. Abnormal discharge from the vagina
What are the complications of STDs during pregnancy?
1. HIV/AIDS: If left untreated, the baby may develop a range of infections which can be fatal.
2. Herpes: Lesions of herpes are contagious and can be passed on to the baby during delivery.
3. Gonorrhea: If you are diagnosed with gonorrhea during your pregnancy and it is left untreated, it may lead to premature delivery of the baby or even a miscarriage.
4. Hepatitis B: If you suffer from Hepatitis B during your pregnancy, the disease may be transmitted to your baby and he can become a lifelong carrier of the disease.
5. Genital warts: Conditions of genital warts result into formation of small clusters in the genital area that may itch or burn. If you develop genital warts during pregnancy, your treatment may be postponed until delivery.
It is extremely important to screen for STDs and other relevant medical conditions during your pregnancy in order to keep a check on major or minor complications. Consult your doctor immediately if you face any of such issues.
