Prostate is a gland that performs the function of producing the fluid required to carry sperm. According to the Urology Care Foundation, 50 % of men have an enlarged prostate when they are around 50 years. An enlarged prostate is a condition that is medically termed as ‘benign prostatic hyperplasia’. An enlarged prostate can cause problems with passing urine.
Causes of Prostate Enlargement-
There are two conditions that cause enlargement of prostate; ageing and the increased secretion of testosterone. The reason behind the growth of prostate glands with the age of men is not known. However, it has been observed that the prostate grows under the influence of Testosterone-a male hormone.
Prostate Laser Surgery-
Prostate laser surgery involves the insertion of a scope through the opening of the penis into the urethra. The laser releases the energy that melts or removes surplus tissues that block the urethra and prevents the passage of urine.
Types of Prostate Surgery-
- ‘Holmium laser ablation of the prostate’: It is the process in which a special type of laser is used to liquefy the surfeit prostate tissue.
- ‘Holmium laser enucleation of the process’: In this process, the excess tissue that blocks the urethra is cut and removed by the laser. An instrument called morcellator is used to cut the prostate tissue into small pieces so as to remove it easily.
- ‘Photoselective vaporization of the prostate’: This is a process in which the laser melts away the unwanted prostate tissue.
It has been established that intake of Vitamin C and Zinc can prevent benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Consumption of alcohol in slight quantities is also said to prevent it. Saw Palmetto – a kind of herbal remedy that has been traditionally used as a medicine is also effective in case of an enlarged prostate.
The type of laser surgery your doctor will perform depends on several factors, including the size of your prostate, your health, the type of laser equipment available and your doctor’s training.
